Seminar on
Benchmarking Renewable Energy Systems
8 June 2004 at 9:00 - 12:00
Salle Passy

Congrès de Paris

75853 Paris 17, France
Seminar in parallel to the
19th European
Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition
How are components in renewable energy systems (RES) used, how
should they be tested and how should recommendations be made for selecting the
most suitable product for an application? This seminar will present a method on
how to evaluate RES for easy comparison of systems. By means of a web-based
tool, data of RES are processed and a report suitable for all types and sizes of
RES is generated. Each RES is automatically assigned to a category characterised
as offering the components in that category similar conditions of use and
subjecting them to a similar combination of stress factors. The process of
creating categories of similar conditions of use is explained for batteries,
which are usually the weakest link in RES. Because operating conditions differ
greatly, test procedures and recommendations have to be defined for each
category separately. Only in this way will it be possible to know which product
is most suitable for a given application and make recommendations to users and
planners by means of a web-based Smart Design Assistant. As a long-term goal,
RES components should be developed, tested and manufactured for specific
categories of use.
